Flower Farm
In 2022 I decided I needed something of my own. I wanted something I could work on outside alongside Steve. I stumbled upon cut flowers and jumped feet first into growing. Growing ranunculus in the spring and zinnias, sunflowers, dahlias, basil, and foraging fillers from my yard. Learning to grow and arrange as I went along. Going out to the garden to see all the new beauty that bloomed each day is such a wonder! Grow joy is what I kept thinking every time I cut and arranged. When someone would purchase a bouquet and tell me a story about memories, or who they planned to give the flowers to, or who the flowers reminded of and childhood memories of growing a certain flower with their mom or grandma. This is what really pushed me to keep going. The joy the flowers brought me through the whole process of planting the seeds and nurturing them to the joy they bring other people. Flowers have been an easy thing to include my two boys with and watching them outside helping with care of the flowers to helping sell the flowers at the Farmers Market. The 2023 growing season is off to a great start with the spring flowers and we look forward to all that will bloom in the summer!
Once Upon a Vineyard
Once in a blue moon, you dream of buying more land for expansion of your vineyard. Turns out available land in this current market is either highly priced or nonexistent. The plan was to get our vineyard going on our property first then look at finding a near by plot to expand on. As anything goes in life, plans change and things come up. We were lead to an already established vineyard close to our home, settled on about 2 acres of land. The vineyard is in desperate need of work and love. There is production that was not harvested, overgrown grass, posts and wire that need to be installed, plants on the ground, lots of pruning and much more. We will work on getting the plants tied up and hopefully mowed this season. I will add a project as we go along. Bringing this beauty back to life will be a multi step process. Follow along as we turn this into a flourishing vineyard and learn as we go.
Burr-Oke Vineyard
A sneak peak of our vineyard. We have 150 plants right now. In the Spring we will be adding 150 new wine grapes. The first picture is a Chambourcin vine training its way up to the wire. This variety is a wine grape, commonly used for red wine. This is the state of Kansas red grape. The mature vine is a Concord table grape vine. Commonly used for jelly, juice or eating off the vine, (although it is very sweet that way).
